At first, I thought, “Yes! This is what writing is like! Getting smacked around by a windstorm of words and ideas. Wrangling them into something book-shaped while sitting on your butt keeping up the appearance of calm and control.”

Then I noticed that there is no book here and I thought, “That is also like writing. But just a stage of it. The this-will-never-be-a-real-thing stage. The maybe-if-I-stick-my-face-in-it-it-will-be-better stage. The I’d-really-like-Beth-Revis-to-bring-the-vodka-now stage.”

Then I noticed that the pages start off with words, but release them as they pass through the door and I thought, “This is getting more depressing the more I try to relate it to writing.”

Then I remembered that this is art and I get to interpret it how I want and I thought, “I really like red doors.”

I recently, shamelessly requested an ARC of Romily Bernard’s debut YA thriller FIND ME.

I don’t usually read books in one sitting. When I was little, this was because I was loathe to finish and leave the world of that book. If I parceled out the pages, I could stay within them for a few days longer. So, I read sparingly because even at the age of eight or nine or whatever I was, I knew there was no going back to the magic of a first read.

Now that I’m beyond those early reading years, I still do this. I’ll work slowly through a book for days only now the reasons are complicated by adult concerns like the day job and yard work and recycling.

But I read FIND ME in one sitting simple because once I was in, I WAS IN.

This book is everything I loved about Christopher Pike as a kid - high stakes situations, kids in WAY too much danger, with a dash of something steamy. To top all of that off, the writing is pitch perfect - full of voice and beautiful craft.

Well. I loved it. I can’t wait for Romily’s next book and I really want to give this ARC to someone. Perhaps to you….(this is the part where I include a link to the contest -> here).
